The Aim of English Language Arts:
On acquiring language and literacy skills through listening, speaking, viewing, and representing, as well as reading and writing. (source: English Language Arts, Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth, English Language Arts Curriculum Overview)
The six major Language Arts Strands:
- reading
- writing
- speaking
- viewing
- representing
- listening
Main Strategies:
1. Writing
Guided Writing:
- Students will learn to improve their sentence and paragraph writing by using "Sentence Openers" and "Enhancers".
Grammar:
- Students will receive regular, formal grammar lessons.
Penmanship:
- Students will receive penmanship lessons.
Spelling:
- Students will usually accomplish one unit each week, beginning with a unit introduction on Mondays, then an assignment, review,
and a test on Fridays.
2. Reading
Novel study:
- At least two novels ("Kidnapped in the Yukon", "Bridge to Terabithia")
Other Reading Material:
- Stories from our reader and from other sources
- Reading Journal time
- Poetry
- Literature Circles
3. Listening/Speaking/Representing/Viewing
- Students will participate in TUSC ("Terrifically Unique Speaking Club") which will be presented 4 - 6 times during the year
- "ICT" (Information and Communication Technology) projects presented using "Powerpoint", "Kidspiration", "ePearl", "Photo Story 3", Internet, scanner, digital camera, "SMART Board", etc. through the year.
- Students will complete assignments like a "Historica" Project.
- Students will listen as the teacher (and others) read good literature, representing various genres, to the class.
