INFO FOR PARENTS

Mental Math:

One of our focuses in math this year will be mental math.  Each student has a “mental math folder”, which will contain practice sheets that the students can use to review and practise their mental math skills.  We will be having periodic tests on the skills that we learn in class.  Please feel free to ask your child to bring these folders home to practise anytime you wish - so long as they come back to school each day.

Our current focus is on the multiplication facts.  I cannot stress enough how essential it is for your child to really know the facts up to 12 X 12!  In some of our later units, and in future grades, those students who do not know their facts will have greater difficulty and will take much longer to complete their assignments.  Unfortunately, we do not have enough time to spend much class time practising these facts, so those students who do not know them will need to practise them at home. For the next month or two we will be having regular oral quizzes which are designed to test students on their recall of the facts.  (This means students should not have to skip count to figure out the answers to the questions.)

Make it fun!  Note that there are some websites provided by the link at the left, ("Mrs. Cassan's Math Links" ), where students can practise their math facts.  There are also plenty of card and dice games that can make the learning more fun and exciting.  The students will be learning some of these games in class.  Encourage them to share them with you at home!  Also, take advantage of travel time in the car, or whenever you have 2 or 3 minutes to quiz your son/daughter on their facts.  A few minutes here and there can make a big difference!

Pretests and Tests:

I would also like you to be aware that at the beginning of each new math unit, I am planning on giving the students a checklist of skills that will be covered during that unit.  Feel free to ask your child to bring it home anytime.  After we finish the unit the students will do a pretest.  Following this, students will have to fill out the self-evaluation portion of the skills checklist, which will help students identify the areas they need to work on before the final test.  The completed checklist will then go home for you to sign.  Hopefully this will help give you and your child some direction when reviewing or studying at home.
If a student achieves a mark of 80% or higher on their pretest, they will have the option of not writing the final test.  However you will have to sign the pretest reflection sheet to confirm that you approve this decision, and the form needs to be returned to school on or before the day of the final test.  Note that both the pretest and final test count towards the students' final mark.  The pretest is worth half the value of the final test, thereby giving students an opportunity to significantly improve their average on the final test.  For students who opt not to write the final test, their pretest mark will be entered as final test mark as well.
